Pension Advice in Cardiff
Understand what you have.
Decide what to do next.
Before moving, contributing to or drawing a pension, see how the choice affects tax, flexibility, investment risk and your wider retirement plan.
A pension decision should begin with its purpose
A pension is not just an account to tidy up. It may provide future income, valuable guarantees, tax advantages and options for the people you leave behind. Changing it without understanding those features can be difficult to undo.
We first establish what each arrangement is, what it costs, where it is invested and which benefits or restrictions apply. That creates an accurate picture before consolidation, contribution or withdrawal options are considered.
The next step is to connect the pension to your objective. If retirement is approaching, cashflow modelling can show when benefits may be needed and how they interact with ISAs, savings, State Pension and expenditure. If you are still accumulating, the focus may be contribution levels, tax relief and the investment strategy.
Recommendations are made within your wider Financial MasterPlan, not in isolation. This helps balance tax efficiency with access, risk with the time horizon, and potential inheritance benefits with your need to fund your own life.
Where pension assets remain invested, we apply the same patient, diversified principles used in our investment advice. The goal is not to make pensions sound simple; it is to make the relevant choices understandable enough for you to decide with confidence.
Two decisions that deserve proper analysis
Bringing plans together can be convenient, but convenience is only one consideration. We compare costs, investment options, access rules and valuable safeguarded features before recommending any change.
Reviewing Separate Pensions
Accessing benefits creates choices about tax-free cash, taxable income and investment risk. We assess withdrawals alongside other assets and the spending your retirement plan needs to support.
Planning Pension Withdrawals
Questions to ask before changing a pension
Is combining my pensions always a good idea?
No. A single plan may be easier to manage, but a transfer could give up guaranteed annuity rates, protected tax-free cash, a favourable pension age or other benefits. We compare what you have with what a new arrangement would provide, including charges and investment choice, before deciding whether consolidation supports your wider plan.
What should I consider before taking pension benefits?
Accessing a pension can affect income tax, future contribution allowances and how long the remaining fund may last. Before withdrawing, it helps to understand why the money is needed, what other assets are available and how the choice fits your retirement income plan. The normal minimum pension age is due to rise from 55 to 57 in April 2028, although individual protections can differ.
Can pension contributions help with tax planning?
Potentially. Personal and employer contributions may receive tax relief, but the available amount depends on earnings, annual allowance rules, previous funding and whether benefits have been accessed flexibly. We assess contributions alongside cash needs and other allowances rather than treating the tax relief as a reason to contribute on its own. See the official GOV.UK guidance for current rules.
How does my State Pension fit with private pensions?
Your State Pension can provide an important foundation, but it normally begins later than many people want to stop working. We include the forecast and expected start date in your cashflow plan, which helps show what private pensions and other assets may need to provide before and after it begins. Any gaps or voluntary contribution decisions should be checked against your individual National Insurance record.
